چکیده

This paper presents an evaluation of the use of solar sails based on inflatable-structures technologies to perform low-cost robotic planetary missions. We show that there is a significant potential synergism between the emerging technologies of microspacecraft and inflatable solar sails that offer the unique capability of performing planetary science missions using a small, low-cost launch vehicle, such as the Pegasus XL, with a launch cost of less than $25M. In the example evaluated here, a roughly 100-m diameter inflatable solar sail can deliver a 48-kg rnicrospacecraft payload to Mars orbit with a trip time of about 725 days. Once in orbit, the microspacecraft can perform orbit changes (including atmospheric entry) with no expenditure of propellant by using the solar sail.

Dual-use Ballute-based Robust Aerocapture, Edl, and Surface Exploration Architecture for Mars

Introduction: The over-arching goals of the exploration of Mars as outlined by Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) are the assessment of life, climate, geology; and prepare for human missions [1]. However, prohibitive propellant requirements have traditionally inhibited mission duration, science payloads mass, and therefore mission goals. Of the five landed robotic systems on the su...

HERRO Mission to Mars Using Telerobotic Surface Exploration from Orbit

In a previous paper, we outlined a strategy for human exploration that combines elements of both human spaceflight and robotic exploration in a cost-effective strategy for exploration that could be adapted to multiple targets in the solar system [1, 2]. This Human Exploration using Real-time Robotic Operations (HERRO) [1] approach differs from the traditional view of human exploration, in that ...

Initial Validation of Robotic Operations for In-Space Assembly of a Large Solar Electric Propulsion Transport Vehicle

Developing a capability for the assembly of large space structures has the potential to increase the capabilities and performance of future space missions and spacecraft while reducing their cost. One such application is a megawatt-class solar electric propulsion (SEP) tug, representing a critical transportation ability for the NASA lunar, Mars, and solar system exploration missions. A series o...
